Title of Dataset | MACCity (MACC/CityZEN EU projects) emissions dataset |
Abstract | In support of the fifth IPCC-AR5 (Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change Assessment Report 5), the ACCMIP (Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate - Model Intercomparison Project) historical emissions dataset has been developed (Lamarque et al, 2010), on a decadal basis (from 1850 to 2000 for the historical dataset), as well as emissions scenarios called RCPs (Representation Concentration Pathways, Van Vuuren et al., 2010). As part of two projects funded by the European Commission, MACC and CityZen, the ACCMIP and the RCPs emissions dataset have been adapted and extended on a yearly basis for the period 1990-2010. For anthropogenic emissions, emission data were interpolated on a yearly basis between the base years 1990, 2000, 2005 and 2010. For the years 2005 and 2010, the RCP 8.5 emissions scenario was chosen (4 emissions scenarios were developed in support of the IPCC-AR5 (IPCC Assessment Report 5): RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5, RCP 6, RCP 8.5).For biomass burning emissions, the ACCMIP dataset was extended as well on a monthly basis. This 'extension' of the ACCMIP and RCPs emission dataset for the MACC and CityZEN projects is referred to as MACCity (MACC/CityZen) emission dataset. |

Methodology | For the ACCMIP dataset, See: Lamarque et al., ACP 2010 (ACP-2010-67). As part of two projects funded by the European Commission, MACC and CityZen, the ACCMIP emissions dataset has been adapted and extended on a yearly basis for the period 1990-2010. For anthropogenic emissions, a seasonal cycle was first applied sector by sector, species were then lumped to MOZART-4 species (21 species), and finally emissions were interpolated on a yearly basis between the base years 1990, 2000, 2005 and 2010. For the years 2005 and 2010, the RCP 8.5 emissions scenario was chosen (4 emissions scenarios were developed in support of the IPCC-AR5 (IPCC Assessment Report 5): RCP 2.6, RCP 4.5, RCP 6, RCP 8.5). For biomass burning emissions, the ACCMIP dataset was extended as well: yearly monthly mean emissions are calculated from modified RETRO carbon emission data for the years 1980 to 1996, and from GFEDv2 carbon emission data for the years 1997 to 2008, by applying a single set of vegetation type specific emission factors, and the predominant vegetation map used in the GFEDv2 inventory. Emissions from peat fires are included. The biomass burning emissions can be obtained by sending an email to Angelika Heil from Forschungszentrum Juelich, Juelich, Germany: a.heil@fz-juelich.de Natural biogenic emissions are those given by MEGANv2 inventory (Guenther et al.), also available on this portal. |
Data source(s) | For anthropogenic emissions: ACCMIP and RCPs emissions datasets. ACCMIP anthropogenic emissions are derived from a combination and harmonization of several existing emission inventories (RETRO, EDGAR, EMEP, EPA, REAS, ...). ACCMIP biomass burning emissions are derived from a harmonization of GFEDv2, RETRO, and GICC datasets. |
